What Vlasic is and who goes there
Vlasic is a high mountain plateau above the town of Travnik in central Bosnia, and the resort settlement most visitors mean is Babanovac, sitting around 1,260 metres. In winter it fills with skiers and snowboarders using the lifts on Mount Vlasic, along with families renting apartments and lodges for the season. In summer the same slopes turn into hiking and mountain-biking terrain, and it becomes a base for paragliding and for cooler air away from the valleys. The area is known for Vlasic cheese and for open pastures grazed by sheep. Most travellers combine the mountain with a stop in Travnik itself, worth seeing for its Ottoman fortress, the coloured Šarena Mosque and its links to Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić.
The drive from the airport through Travnik
From Sarajevo International Airport the route heads northwest out of the Sarajevo basin, joining the corridor towards Zenica before turning off for Travnik on the M-5. This first stretch is mostly valley and gorge driving along the Bosna and Lašva rivers, with some motorway sections and stretches of ordinary main road through towns like Kiseljak and Busovača. Travnik is roughly the two-thirds mark and a natural place to pause. The final part is the one passengers notice most: a steady climbing road of tight switchbacks from Travnik up onto the Vlasic plateau to Babanovac. Expect around two hours in good conditions. In winter this ascent is snow-covered and slow, so the last section takes longer than the map distance suggests.
Practical tips for this mountain route
Give your driver the exact name of your lodge or apartment in Babanovac, not just "Vlasic" — the accommodation is spread across the plateau and small side lanes, and many properties are booked individually rather than through one large reception. In winter, confirm whether your driver's vehicle carries winter tyres and chains, as the climb from Travnik can be icy and occasionally closed after heavy snow. Ski gear and luggage take space, so mention hard ski bags when booking. There is no full-service supermarket on the plateau comparable to those in the valley, so a stop in Travnik for supplies is worth requesting in advance. Mobile signal and card payment can be patchy up top, so carry some local currency for smaller places.
