What Vareš is known for
Vareš is a small town in central Bosnia with a long iron and mining history, recently back in focus thanks to Adriatic Metals reopening the silver-zinc-lead operation at Vareš Majdan. Most visitors are here for work tied to the mine, or for the surrounding mountains. The main draw for day-trippers is Bobovac, the medieval fortress and royal seat of the Bosnian kings, reached by a forest road and a short walk north of town. Hikers head for Zvijezda mountain and the Stavnja river valley, best from late spring through autumn. The town itself is compact, with the Franciscan church and a quiet centre. It is not a resort, so come for the history, walking, and the working landscape rather than nightlife.
The drive north through the Stavnja valley
From Sarajevo International Airport the route runs north through the city outskirts and onto the M17/E73 corridor along the Bosna river towards Podlugovi and Ilijaš. From there the road turns off onto the regional route that follows the Stavnja river up into the hills to Vareš. The first part is fast, flat valley driving; the final stretch is a narrower, winding road that climbs steadily with a series of bends as it enters the wooded uplands. Expect roughly 60 kilometres and around an hour and a quarter, longer in snow or if the M17 is busy through Ilijaš. It is a scenic inland drive rather than a motorway sprint, so passengers prone to car sickness should sit forward and keep an eye on the road for the last section.
Practical advice for this route
Vareš is inland and higher than Sarajevo, so from late autumn to early spring the final climb can carry snow and ice even when the airport is clear; allow extra time and confirm winter-equipped vehicles. There is no rail-air link that reaches Vareš conveniently, and public buses require a change in Ilijaš, which makes a direct transfer the practical choice, especially with luggage or mine-site kit. Give your driver the specific address — Vareš town, Vareš Majdan, or a trailhead like the Bobovac approach — as these are spread out. Cash and ATMs are limited in town, so sort money in Sarajevo before leaving. If you plan to visit Bobovac, ask to be dropped as close as the forest road allows, since the last stretch is on foot.
