The scenery shifts noticeably from green river canyon to bare stone hills, and the last approach into Trebinje follows the river toward the town.

Because much of the road is single-carriageway through the mountains, allow buffer time if you have onward plans such as a ferry or a booking in Dubrovnik. The stretch between Mostar and Ljubinje has few large towns and limited fuel and food stops, so it is worth pausing in Mostar for a break and a meal. A driver can build in a short stop at the Old Bridge without much detour. Weather matters: winter can bring fog and ice on the higher karst sections, while summer afternoons are hot with strong sun.
