What Trebinje is known for
Trebinje sits on the Trebišnjica river in the far south of Herzegovina, close to the Croatian and Montenegrin borders. Its walled Old Town (Kastel) has narrow lanes, Ottoman-era houses and a square shaded by large plane trees where locals gather in the evening. The Ottoman-built Arslanagić (Perovića) stone bridge stands just outside the centre, and the Hercegovačka Gračanica monastery crowns Crkvina hill with wide views over the valley. The region is wine country: the Tvrdoš Monastery and the Vukoje winery both produce Žilavka and Vranac. Many visitors come as a quieter base for day trips to Dubrovnik, about 30 km south, while others come for the wineries, the riverside cafés and the warm Mediterranean-influenced climate that makes spring and autumn especially pleasant here.
The drive south through Mostar and Herzegovina
The route runs roughly 230 km and takes around three and a half to four hours. From the airport you head south on the M17 corridor, following the Neretva through the Konjic gorge and down to Mostar, where the road passes close to the historic centre and its Ottoman bridge. Beyond Mostar the road climbs away from the river toward the drier limestone landscape of eastern Herzegovina, passing Stolac and Ljubinje on quieter regional roads before the final descent into the Trebišnjica valley. Expect long stretches of two-lane road rather than motorway, with winding sections through the mountains and open karst plateaus in between. The scenery shifts noticeably from green river canyon to bare stone hills, and the last approach into Trebinje follows the river toward the town.
Planning this specific transfer
Because much of the road is single-carriageway through the mountains, allow buffer time if you have onward plans such as a ferry or a booking in Dubrovnik. The stretch between Mostar and Ljubinje has few large towns and limited fuel and food stops, so it is worth pausing in Mostar for a break and a meal. A driver can build in a short stop at the Old Bridge without much detour. Weather matters: winter can bring fog and ice on the higher karst sections, while summer afternoons are hot with strong sun. If your final destination is a village winery or the monastery on Crkvina hill, give the exact address, as some access roads are narrow. Travellers continuing to Dubrovnik should confirm passport requirements, since the border crossing is close to Trebinje.
