What Travnik is known for
Travnik was the seat of Ottoman viziers in Bosnia, and that history still shapes the town. The Šarena Džamija (Colourful Mosque), with its painted façade and a covered bazaar underneath, sits near the centre, and above it the medieval fortress, Stari Grad, looks over the Lašva valley. At the eastern edge, Plava Voda is a spring where cold streams run past cafés and small bridges — a standard stop for lunch and grilled ćevapi. Travnik is also the birthplace of Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić, and his memorial house is open to visitors. Many travellers arrive on the way to Vlašić mountain above the town, popular for skiing in winter and hiking and its sheep's cheese the rest of the year.
The drive northwest along the Lašva valley
The route runs northwest from Sarajevo International Airport, mostly on the M5 through the central Bosnian valleys. After leaving the airport area near Ilidža, the road passes Kiseljak and Busovača before reaching Vitez, then continues into Travnik alongside the Lašva river. This is inland, hilly terrain rather than mountain passes — no dramatic switchbacks, but a steady mix of small towns, roadside workshops and river crossings. A stretch of the A1 motorway can be used for part of the way to save time, rejoining the M5 near Kakanj or Visoko. Expect roughly 90 kilometres and around an hour and a half, longer if you hit the slow single-lane sections through Vitez during weekday traffic. The final approach into Travnik is straightforward, following the valley floor.
Practical tips for this transfer
Travnik's old core has narrow streets around the Colourful Mosque and Plava Voda, so ask the driver to set down at the closest accessible point rather than expecting door service deep in the bazaar. If Vlašić is your real destination, say so when booking: the mountain road climbs above the town and adds another 25–30 minutes on a winding ascent, and winter conditions may need a suitable vehicle. The Vitez stretch is the usual bottleneck, so an early departure helps on weekday mornings. There are fuel stations and cafés along the M5 near Kiseljak and Vitez if you want a break. Cash in convertible marks (KM) is handy for the bazaar and Plava Voda cafés, as card acceptance is inconsistent in smaller places.
