What defines Tomislavgrad and the Duvno plain
Tomislavgrad sits on the flat karst floor of the Duvno plain (Duvanjsko polje) in Canton 10, southwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, ringed by the Vran and Ljubuša mountains. The town centre is compact, built around the large Franciscan church and monastery and the monument to King Tomislav, who tradition links to a coronation on this plain in 925. Below Lib hill lie the remains of Roman Delminium, which gave the region its old name, Duvno. Most people arriving are visiting family in surrounding villages such as Kongora, Eminovo Selo and Mesihovina, or heading onward to the Blidinje Nature Park and its Risovac ski slopes and mountain lodges. Summer brings hikers and cyclists; winter brings skiers to Blidinje and returning diaspora at holidays.
The drive from Sarajevo Airport over the Makljen pass
The route leaves the airport at Butmir and follows the M17 south down the Neretva valley through Konjic and Jablanica, past the Jablaničko reservoir. Near Jablanica the road turns west toward Prozor-Rama, skirting Ramsko Lake, then climbs the Makljen pass at roughly 1,100 metres before dropping onto the Duvno plain and into Tomislavgrad. Expect around 140 kilometres and close to three hours. The first stretch along the Neretva is scenic but slow, with tunnels, gorges and truck traffic; the mountain section beyond Prozor is winding with switchbacks and can be genuinely testing in fog or snow. Once on the plain the final approach is flat and straightforward. It is a mountain drive throughout, not a motorway run.
Practical advice for this specific route
In winter the Makljen pass and the Blidinje road can hold snow and ice well into spring, so allow extra time and expect slower going; a delayed flight into Sarajevo can mean tackling the mountain section after dark, which is worth flagging when you book. Fuel and food stops are easy in Jablanica (known for its spit-roast lamb) and Prozor, but thin out afterwards, so use them. Carry your passport and vehicle documents, as this canton borders the Croatian frontier region and checks happen. If you are continuing to a village address or a Blidinje lodge rather than the town centre, give the exact settlement name and a phone contact, since rural addresses and signage are limited. Mobile coverage drops on the pass.
