What Konjic is known for
Konjic sits on the Neretva river where it cuts through the mountains between Sarajevo and Mostar. Its centrepiece is the Ottoman-era stone bridge (Stara Ćuprija), rebuilt after wartime destruction, with the old town clustered on the banks around it. Two things draw most visitors: ARK D-0, Tito's Cold War nuclear bunker dug into the hillside just outside town and now used partly as an art space, and the rafting bases that launch trips down the Neretva canyon toward Jablanica. Boračko Lake, a short drive up toward the Prenj massif, is popular with hikers and campers in summer. The town also keeps a long woodcarving tradition, and you'll see workshops selling carved boxes and furniture. Spring and summer are busiest; autumn suits walkers on Prenj and Bjelašnica.
The drive south over Ivan pass
From Sarajevo International Airport the route heads southwest out of the Sarajevo basin and climbs toward Ivan Sedlo (Ivan pass), the watershed between the Adriatic and Black Sea catchments. This is the older M17 corridor, and the section over the pass is the slowest part: gradients, a tunnel near the top, and bends where trucks bunch up. Once you're over the crest the road drops steadily and picks up the Neretva valley, following the river down into Konjic. The whole run is inland and mountainous rather than motorway-fast, so expect roughly an hour for about 60 kilometres. In winter the pass can hold snow and ice, and vehicles are occasionally held while ploughs clear it, so the timing is more weather-dependent than the short distance suggests.
Practical notes for this route
If you plan to visit Tito's bunker (ARK D-0), book the guided tour in advance — entry is by timed group tours only, not walk-in, and slots fill in summer. Tell your driver whether you want the town centre and old bridge or one of the rafting camps further up the Neretva, as several operators are based outside Konjic itself and add driving time. Konjic's old-town lanes near the bridge are tight and partly pedestrian, so drop-offs are usually at the edge with a short walk in. Cash in convertible marks (KM) is handy for smaller cafés and market stalls, though cards work in larger places. If you're continuing to Mostar afterward, the same M17 valley road carries on south, so a one-way transfer that drops and continues can make sense.
