What Jablanica is known for
Jablanica sits on the Neretva river and the edge of Jablaničko Lake, in Herzegovina. It is best known for two things. First, the roadside restaurants along the old M17 that serve spit-roasted lamb (jagnjetina) — Zdrava Voda and its neighbours draw drivers from across the country, and many people stop here specifically to eat. Second, the collapsed railway bridge over the Neretva and the Battle for the Wounded on the Neretva museum, which mark a 1943 WWII engagement and appear in the film about it. Hikers use the town as a base for the Prenj and Čvrsnica massifs and the Diva Grabovica canyon. Day-trippers and lake visitors come mostly in late spring through early autumn; the lamb restaurants operate year-round.
The drive south on the M17
From Sarajevo International Airport the route runs south, joining the M17 corridor that follows the Neretva valley toward Mostar. You climb over the Ivan pass near Bradina — the watershed between the Sarajevo basin and Herzegovina — then descend into Konjic, a town on the Neretva with its restored Ottoman stone bridge. From Konjic the road hugs the river and Jablaničko Lake down to Jablanica. The terrain is firmly mountainous and the road is a two-lane trunk route rather than a motorway, with tunnels, curves and slower trucks on the climbs. Expect roughly 90 minutes for the 75 or so kilometres. Sections have been upgraded with new corridor works, so alignments can change; the river and lake stay in view for much of the second half.
Practical tips for this route
Time your trip around a meal — the Jablanica lamb restaurants are the reason many travellers pass through, and a mid-journey stop near Konjic or at the town itself is easy to arrange with your driver in advance. Weather matters on the Ivan pass: in winter it holds snow and ice, so allow extra time from November to March. The M17 is a busy freight route, and roadworks tied to the new corridor can cause single-lane sections and delays, particularly in daylight hours. If you are continuing to Mostar, Počitelj or the coast, Jablanica is a logical break point rather than a final stop. Fuel and cash for the small museum are worth having; card acceptance at riverside restaurants and the WWII site can be inconsistent.
