What Grude is and who travels there
Grude sits in West Herzegovina Canton, a few kilometres from the Croatian border near Imotski. It's a compact Croat-majority town more industrial and residential than touristic, with the Violeta paper works among its best-known employers. Most travellers arriving here are visiting relatives from the large local diaspora, returning home in summer, or basing themselves for the wider region. Nearby is the Peć-Mlini cave and the emerald Tihaljina river, popular for a quiet riverside meal. Grude also works well as a base for pilgrims heading to Međugorje, roughly half an hour east, and for day trips to Kravica waterfall near Ljubuški or the lakes of Imotski just over the border. Summer brings the busiest period, with returning families and warm, dry Mediterranean-inland weather.
The drive from Sarajevo Airport through the Neretva valley
The route runs south out of Sarajevo, joining the corridor toward Mostar. Much of the first stretch follows the Neretva valley on the M17, a scenic but slower road that winds beside the river, with sections of the A1 motorway used where completed. You pass Konjic, the Jablanica lake and reservoir, and Mostar before turning west. From Mostar the road climbs onto the Herzegovina plateau toward Široki Brijeg, then continues to Grude on the M6. Expect around two and a half to three hours depending on traffic through Mostar and any roadworks in the valley. The landscape shifts from forested mountains near Sarajevo to the drier, stony karst and vineyards of western Herzegovina. The final approach into Grude is on flat, open ground rather than a mountain descent.
Practical tips for this route
Carry your passport within reach: Grude sits close to the Croatian border, and if your plans include Imotski, split routes sometimes run near or across it. Bosnia uses the convertible mark (BAM), not the euro, so change some cash before leaving the airport, as smaller places in Grude may not take cards. The Neretva valley stretch has limited fuel and food stops between Konjic and Mostar, so plan a break in Mostar if you want one. Traffic through Mostar can slow in summer afternoons; an earlier departure helps. If you're continuing to Međugorje the same day, tell your driver in advance, as it's a short detour east rather than on the direct line. Winter driving over the plateau can bring fog and ice, so allow extra time in the colder months.
