Why people travel to Fojnica
Fojnica is a small thermal-spa town in central Bosnia, best known for the Reumal spa and rehabilitation complex, where visitors come for thermal water treatments and longer wellness or recovery stays. The town also draws pilgrims and history-minded travellers to the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Spirit, which holds a well-known ethnographic and manuscript collection. In summer, hikers and families use Fojnica as a base for Prokoško Lake, a glacial lake on Vranica mountain surrounded by traditional shepherd huts. Winter guests tend to be spa clients rather than skiers. The centre is compact, with the Dragača stream running through it and steep streets climbing the surrounding hillsides. Most arrivals are staying several nights rather than passing through on a day trip.
The drive from the airport through Kiseljak
The route leaves Sarajevo International Airport in Butmir and skirts the western edge of the city before heading inland toward Kiseljak on the main road via Hadžići and Blažuj. This first stretch is the busiest part and can slow down in commuter traffic. At Kiseljak the road branches off southwest toward Fojnica along a regional road that follows the valley of the Fojnica river. The terrain shifts from open valley to a narrower, wooded corridor with modest climbs and bends as you approach the town. It is not a motorway route — expect a two-lane regional road for most of the way. The full journey is roughly 55 kilometres and usually takes a little over an hour, longer in snow or heavy traffic around Kiseljak.
Practical tips for this transfer
If your stay is at the Reumal spa complex, tell the driver in advance, as the reception and rehabilitation buildings have separate entrances and it saves confusion on arrival. There is no rail link to Fojnica and local bus connections from the airport require changing in Sarajevo or Kiseljak, so a direct transfer is the simplest option. If you plan to continue to Prokoško Lake, note that the final approach up Vranica is a rough mountain track better suited to higher-clearance vehicles and usually arranged separately from an airport car. In winter, ask about road conditions on the Kiseljak–Fojnica stretch, as snow can add time. Stock up on cash in Kiseljak if needed, since smaller places in Fojnica may not take cards.
