What to expect in Trebinje near the Dubrovnik border
Trebinje sits in the far south of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Republika Srpska, about 30 km inland from Dubrovnik and its Adriatic coast. The compact walled Old Town (Stari Grad) opens onto a square shaded by tall plane trees, with cafes around it and the Trebišnjica River running alongside. The stone Arslanagić (Perovića) Bridge and the Hercegovačka Gračanica monastery, set on Crkvina hill above the town, are the landmarks people climb to for the valley view. This is a wine region: Tvrdoš Monastery and nearby cellars produce Vranac and Žilavka. Visitors are often day-trippers pairing it with Dubrovnik, wine tourists, and travellers wanting a quieter, cheaper base close to the coast, mainly from late spring through early autumn.
The mountain drive from Sarajevo through Sutjeska
This is a long inland mountain drive, not a coastal run. From Sarajevo the route heads south on the M18 towards Foča, then climbs through the Sutjeska National Park, passing the Tjentište area and the high, forested Zelengora massif. Beyond that the road runs across the open Gacko plateau, past the Bileća reservoir, and drops down the Trebišnjica valley into Trebinje. Expect roughly four hours for around 225 km. The terrain is genuinely mountainous with sustained curves, elevation changes and stretches of two-lane road behind slower traffic, so it feels longer than the distance suggests. The scenery through the national park and along the reservoir is the highlight, and there are few large towns in between for stops.
Practical tips for this Sarajevo–Trebinje route
Plan for a full half-day and eat before leaving; reliable food and fuel stops thin out after Foča, so agree a break in the Sutjeska area or at Gacko with your driver. Mountain passes can hold snow and fog from late autumn into spring, which slows the run, so build in buffer time for onward plans. If your real goal is Dubrovnik, note Trebinje is in Bosnia while Dubrovnik is in Croatia, so a border crossing is involved for any onward hop; carry your passport and, for non-EU nationals, check visa rules for both countries. The Old Town is small and partly pedestrian, so ask to be dropped near the plane-tree square rather than expecting to drive to your door. Saturday's market is the busiest time in the centre.
