What draws visitors to Blagaj
Blagaj sits about 12 km southeast of Mostar, in Herzegovina, and its main draw is the Blagaj Tekija — a 16th-century Dervish monastery built against a limestone cliff at the source of the Buna River (Vrelo Bune), one of Europe's most powerful karst springs. Day-trippers come to walk the riverside path, eat trout at the restaurants strung along the water, and take a short boat into the cave mouth where the Buna emerges. Above the village stands the ruined Stjepan-grad fortress for those willing to climb. The surrounding slopes are wine country, known for Žilavka and Blatina varieties. Most visitors arrive spring through autumn, combining Blagaj with Mostar and Počitelj in a single day.
The drive down the Neretva valley
The route runs south from the airport along the M17 corridor, which follows the Neretva River almost the whole way. You leave the Sarajevo basin, pass Konjic with its old stone bridge, then Jablanica and its long turquoise reservoir before the road tightens into the Neretva canyon — a stretch of tunnels, rock walls and river bends where the driving slows. Traffic can build behind trucks on the two-lane sections, so the roughly 140 km takes around two to two and a half hours rather than a straight highway run. Near Mostar the road opens into flatter Herzegovinian country, then a short branch road turns off toward Blagaj, ending on narrow village lanes close to the Tekija.
Practical tips for the Blagaj transfer
The last approach into Blagaj is on tight village streets with limited parking near the Tekija, so tell the driver your exact guesthouse or the point along the Buna you want, rather than just "Blagaj" — the riverside restaurants and the accommodation on the hillside are reached differently. If you plan to visit the Tekija, bring modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered); scarves are usually available at the entrance. The canyon section has few services, so use the airport or a stop in Konjic or Jablanica for restrooms and coffee. Many travellers ask the driver to pause in Mostar for the Stari Most on the way down. Carry some Bosnian marks in cash, as small trout restaurants and the boat into the spring cave may not take cards.
