Why people come to St. Anton am Arlberg
St. Anton sits at the eastern end of the Arlberg pass in Tyrol and is a serious winter resort, part of the Ski Arlberg area linked with St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech and Zürs. Skiers come for the Galzig and Valluga lifts, the Rendl and Kapall slopes, and off-piste terrain that draws confident skiers rather than beginners. The pedestrian Dorfstrasse fills in late afternoon, with après-ski institutions like MooserWirt and Krazy Kanguruh on the piste back into the village. In summer the same valley turns to hiking and mountain biking around the Verwall and Rendl. Most visitors arrive December to April; the village all but closes between seasons, so check that your hotel is actually open.
The drive from Salzburg across to the Arlberg
This is a long inland mountain drive, roughly 290 km and close to three hours in clear conditions. The usual route leaves Salzburg westward on the German A8 toward Rosenheim, drops onto the A93 to Kufstein, then follows the Austrian A12 Inntal motorway the full length of the valley past Innsbruck and on toward Landeck. From Landeck you leave the motorway for the S16 Arlberg road climbing up into the Stanzer valley, with St. Anton reached before the Arlberg tunnel. The motorway portion is fast and scenic along the Inn river; the final climb is a steadier, winding ascent. In winter the last stretch can carry snow and chains, which lengthens the journey noticeably.
Practical advice for this transfer
Because the route crosses into Germany and back, journey times swing with traffic around Kufstein and the Inntal, which jams on winter Saturdays when the whole Alps change over guests. Travelling midweek or booking an early slot avoids the worst. Confirm your exact hotel address: St. Anton's centre is partly pedestrian, and some lodgings sit up in Nasserein or St. Jakob rather than on the main Dorfstrasse, which changes the drop-off point. Pack chains-ready expectations in deep winter; a vehicle equipped for Arlberg conditions matters more than raw speed. If you're carrying skis or boards, say so when booking so luggage space is allowed for. A rest stop around Innsbruck is sensible on a drive this long.
