What Hochsölden is and who comes here
Hochsölden is a small cluster of ski hotels perched at around 2,090 m directly above the resort town of Sölden, in Tyrol's Ötztal valley. Unlike Sölden below, it is a quiet settlement of a handful of hotels with lifts on the doorstep, so most guests are skiers who want true ski-in, ski-out access to the Giggijoch and Hochsölden slopes. Sölden itself draws World Cup crowds each autumn for the glacier race on the Rettenbach, and film fans visit the ice Q restaurant and 007 Elements on the Gaislachkogl, used in the Bond film Spectre. Hochsölden is the calmer base above the valley nightlife, favoured by families and dedicated skiers in winter and by hikers in summer.
The drive up the Inn valley and into the Ötztal
The route runs west from Salzburg, mostly on motorway. Drivers typically cross into Germany and take the A8 and A93 past Rosenheim and Kufstein, then follow the A12 Inntal motorway along the Inn river toward Innsbruck. You leave the motorway at the Ötztal exit near Haiming, then head south on the B186 through the valley villages of Ötz, Umhausen and Längenfeld before reaching Sölden. The final stretch is the memorable part: a narrow, steeply switchbacking private road climbs from Sölden up to Hochsölden, gaining several hundred metres in a short distance. Expect around three and a half hours in good conditions. The motorway portion is straightforward; the valley road and the climb to Hochsölden slow things down, especially in snow.
Practical advice for the Hochsölden transfer
The access road to Hochsölden is regulated and demanding in winter, so a vehicle with winter tyres and chains is essential; confirm your hotel's exact entrance when booking, as the hotels sit at slightly different points along the single climbing road. Because Hochsölden is largely car-restricted, some properties arrange luggage handling or a short shuttle for the last few metres — ask in advance. During the Ötztal glacier World Cup weekend and peak season changeover Saturdays, the B186 through Sölden can be congested, so allow extra time. If heavy snow closes the upper road, drivers may drop you in Sölden to connect with the resort's own transport. Carry warm clothing in your hand luggage for the altitude change, since you arrive well above 2,000 m.
