The route leaves Salzburg Airport and joins the A10 Tauern motorway, heading south past Hallein and Golling with the Tennengebirge rising on either side. After roughly an hour you exit near Bischofshofen or St. Johann im Pongau and pick up the B311 to Lend, where the road turns into the Gastein Valley on the B167. From Lend the character changes: the valley narrows, the road climbs steadily past Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein, following the Gasteiner Ache river. The final approach into Bad Gastein is the part passengers notice most — tight bends and steep streets winding up between the terraced hotels to reach the upper town. Expect around 100 kilometres and about an hour and a half, longer after heavy snowfall.

In winter, tell the driver your exact hotel: Bad Gastein's steep, layered streets mean the difference between an upper-town and lower-town address is a real climb with luggage. Many hotels have limited drop-off space, so a door-to-door transfer avoids dragging bags across icy pavements. If your final destination is Böckstein for the Heilstollen tunnels or you plan to load the car onto the Tauern motorail toward Mallnitz, mention it in advance. The A10 through the Pongau can slow badly on peak Saturdays during the ski season when changeover traffic builds, so an early flight helps. Snow chains and winter tyres are standard on this corridor from November onward. In summer the same drive is straightforward, and the valley road is scenic without being difficult.
