La Manga del Mar Menor: two seas on one strip
La Manga is a narrow 21-kilometre sandbar with the shallow, warm Mar Menor lagoon on one side and the open Mediterranean on the other. Families come in summer for the calm, waist-deep lagoon water and for watersports launched near the Tomás Maestre marina. At the southern tip, Cabo de Palos has its lighthouse, seafood restaurants serving caldero rice, and diving trips out to the Islas Hormigas marine reserve. A single road, the Gran Vía, runs the full length, so hotels and apartment blocks are numbered by kilometre point. Note that La Manga Club, the golf and tennis resort, is a separate place inland near Los Belones, not on the strip itself.
The drive from Corvera airport to the strip
The route leaves Región de Murcia International Airport (Corvera) and heads south toward Cartagena, mostly on dual carriageway and motorway, before turning east on the RM-12 toward Los Belones and the coast. It is around 70 kilometres and typically under an hour outside peak summer weekends. The terrain is flat farmland and low hills for most of the way, with the Mar Menor opening up on your left as you approach. Once you cross onto the Gran Vía, the strip is a straight, single-artery road where traffic slows in July and August. If your accommodation sits toward the northern end near Tomás Maestre, the final stretch adds several kilometres of slow driving past resort entrances.
Practical tips for arriving in La Manga
Give your driver the Gran Vía kilometre point or the name of your urbanisation, not just "La Manga" — the strip is long and addresses repeat along it. If you are booked at La Manga Club, say so clearly, since it is a different location near Los Belones and the drive there does not enter the strip at all. In peak summer the Gran Vía backs up in the afternoons and around beach-access points, so an earlier arrival is smoother. Many apartment blocks have limited drop-off space; ask your host which side of the road the entrance is on. For late flights, note that direct bus links thin out in the evening, which is why a pre-booked door-to-door transfer is the reliable option here.
