What you'll find in Zadar
Zadar's old town sits on a narrow peninsula reached through the Land Gate, with the Roman Forum, the round church of St. Donatus and the marble-paved Kalelarga running its length. At the peninsula's tip are the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun, best visited at sunset. Families and swimmers use Kolovare beach just south of the walls and the Borik hotel zone to the north, while boaters head for the Tankerkomerc marina and D-Marin in nearby Sukošan. Zadar is also the ferry hub for Ugljan, Dugi Otok and the Kornati islands, and a base for day trips to Paklenica, Plitvice and the Nin salt pans. Try the local Maraschino cherry liqueur while you're here.
The drive south via Rijeka and the A1
This is a long but straightforward motorway run. From Pula the driver takes the Istrian Y (A9/A8) across the peninsula and through the Učka tunnel toward Rijeka, then joins the A7 and the A1 heading south. Most of the journey is toll motorway through inland and mountain terrain, passing under the Velebit range via the Sveti Rok tunnel. The scenery opens up near Maslenica, where the bridge crosses a deep sea channel and you get your first coastal views before the exit for Zadar. Expect roughly three hours without stops. The final stretch into Zadar leaves the motorway and runs along ordinary roads to the old town, marina or Borik.
Practical tips for this route
Because the old-town peninsula is largely pedestrian, most transfers drop you at the edge near the Land Gate, the ferry quay or the bridge to the mainland; tell your driver your exact accommodation so they know which side of the water you're staying on. If you're heading to Borik, Petrčane or Zaton, these are north of the centre and add a few minutes. The route passes several motorway service areas around Rijeka and near Otočac, useful for a break on a three-hour trip with children. If you plan an onward island ferry from Zadar's Gaženica port, allow extra buffer time, as it's a separate terminal a short drive from the old town. Summer traffic near Rijeka can be slow on weekends.
