What Vila Praia de Ancora is known for
Vila Praia de Ancora is a fishing and beach town in the Caminha municipality, close to the Minho estuary and the Spanish border. Its wide Praia do Norte and the sheltered beach beside the river Ancora fill up with Portuguese and Galician families in July and August, drawn by shallow water and a small working harbour where boats still land the day's catch. The Anta da Barrosa dolmen sits just outside town, and the Forte do Cão guards the shore. Nearby Moledo, Caminha and the Serra de Arga hills add day trips for walkers. The town has a train station on the Linha do Minho, a seafront promenade and seafood restaurants around the harbour. It stays quieter and more local in feel than Porto's coastal resorts to the south.
The drive north along the A28
The route runs almost entirely on the A28, the motorway that follows the northern coast out of Porto. From the airport at Pedras Rubras you join the A28 quickly and head north past Vila do Conde, Póvoa de Varzim, Esposende and Viana do Castelo, with occasional glimpses of the Atlantic and pine woods. Traffic is usually light once you clear the Porto suburbs, and the road is toll-free for much of this stretch. After Viana you cross the river Lima and continue toward Caminha; the exit for Vila Praia de Ancora leads onto shorter local roads down into the town. The journey is about 85 kilometres and typically takes a little over an hour. The final approach is gentle, flat and coastal rather than a winding mountain descent.
Practical tips for this route
In summer, the town centre and seafront around the harbour get busy and parking is tight, so give your driver the exact street or accommodation name rather than just "the beach", as several access roads lead to different parts of the shore. If you are continuing across the border into Galicia (Tui or A Guarda are close via Caminha and the Minho ferry or the Cerveira bridge), mention it when booking so the drop-off point makes sense. The A28 is fast but coastal weather can bring sea fog or wind near Viana, so allow a small buffer for a flight connection. For groups with beach gear, surfboards or golf clubs heading to courses around the Minho, confirm luggage space in advance. Evening arrivals are straightforward as the motorway is well lit to Viana.
