Private transfer from Podgorica Airport to Zabljak
Door-to-door transfer from Podgorica Airport to Zabljak with professional driver, fixed price and flight monitoring included.
Why people travel to Zabljak
Zabljak sits at roughly 1,450 metres inside Durmitor National Park, making it the highest town in the Balkans. In summer it fills with hikers heading for the Black Lake (Crno jezero), a 30-minute walk from town, and for the tougher climb up Bobotov Kuk and the Ice Cave. The Tara River Canyon and the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge, with its rafting and zip-line, draw day-trippers north of town. In winter the Savin Kuk and Javorovaca slopes turn Zabljak into a modest ski base. The town itself is small and functional rather than scenic, built around a single main crossroads with guesthouses, pizzerias and equipment-rental shops. Most visitors are outdoor-focused Montenegrins, Serbs and international hikers; few come just to sit in cafes.
The drive from Podgorica Airport through the mountains
Podgorica Airport is about 12 km south of the capital. The transfer heads first toward Podgorica, then west on the main road to Niksic, Montenegro's second city, on relatively straight and open terrain. From Niksic the route turns north through Savnik, where the road narrows and begins a long, steady climb into the Durmitor massif with repeated switchbacks and rising altitude. Expect the final hour to be slow, twisting mountain driving with sharp drops and slower local traffic. The whole journey runs around 170 km and typically takes close to three hours, sometimes more in poor weather. Passengers gain over 1,400 metres of elevation, so ears may pop and the temperature at Zabljak is usually far cooler than at the coast or the airport.
Practical advice for this route
Bring warm layers even in summer: nights at Zabljak can approach freezing while Podgorica bakes at 35°C. From late autumn through spring, snow chains or winter tyres are legally required on this route, and heavy snowfall can slow the Savnik climb considerably, so allow extra time for flights out. There are few reliable service stations between Niksic and Zabljak, so a comfort stop in Niksic is the practical choice. Mobile signal drops out in sections of the canyon and mountain road. Book a driver familiar with the northern roads rather than the coastal ones. If you plan to visit the Tara Bridge or Black Lake, tell the driver in advance, as these lie beyond the town centre and are easier arranged as part of the transfer than reached later.
