What Budva is known for
Budva is Montenegro's busiest coastal town, built around a walled Stari Grad (Old Town) with the Citadela and the Church of St. Ivan at its centre. The long Slovenska Plaza sits just north of the walls, while the smaller, pebbly Mogren beach hides west of the peninsula. Families and package tourists fill Bečići and Rafailovići in July and August; the same crowd fuels the summer nightlife at clubs like Top Hill on the hillside above town. Day-trippers use Budva as a base for Sveti Stefan and Petrovac to the south. The Dukley Marina and its restaurants draw yacht traffic. Outside peak season, Budva is far calmer, and the Old Town's narrow stone lanes are easy to wander without the crush.
The drive over the Sozina tunnel to the coast
The route leaves Podgorica Airport south on the E80/E65 corridor across the flat Zeta plain, then climbs briefly before entering the Sozina tunnel, a roughly 4-kilometre toll bore that cuts through the coastal mountains and drops you near Sutomore on the Adriatic. From there the road turns north along the coast, passing Petrovac and Sveti Stefan, with the sea appearing on your left. The final stretch into Budva is a winding two-lane coastal road that can slow to a crawl in summer traffic, especially around Bečići. Total distance is about 65 kilometres and the drive normally takes around 70 minutes, longer in July and August. The tunnel section is the fastest part; the coastal approach is the scenic, slower one.
Practical tips for arriving in Budva
Cars cannot enter the walled Old Town, so ask your driver for the drop-off point nearest your accommodation — the Slovenska Plaza promenade side or the marina end are the usual choices, and you'll likely finish on foot with luggage over cobbles. If you're staying in Bečići or Rafailovići, tell the driver in advance, as these are separate stops along the coast road rather than central Budva. The Sozina tunnel charges a toll each way; a private transfer handles this for you. In peak summer, allow extra time for congestion on the final coastal kilometres and for the pedestrianised zone limiting how close vehicles can go. Cash in euros is useful for small cafés in the Old Town, and comfortable shoes matter given the stone streets and beach walks.
