Why travellers head to Siena
Siena is a walled Gothic city built across three hills, and almost everyone arrives for the medieval centre. The shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, the black-and-white striped Duomo, and the Torre del Mangia are the fixed points of any visit. The city is famous for the Palio, the bareback horse race held in the Campo on 2 July and 16 August, when the seventeen contrade (districts) take over the streets and rooms sell out months ahead. Outside those dates, Siena draws day-trippers and slower stayers exploring the Chianti hills to the north and the Val d'Orcia to the south. Nearby Monteriggioni and San Gimignano are common half-day trips. Spring and early autumn are the comfortable seasons; July and August bring heat and crowds.
The drive from Pisa to Siena
The route runs almost entirely on fast dual carriageway, so it's a smooth inland drive of roughly 130 km taking about an hour and three quarters. From the airport you join the SGC Firenze–Pisa–Livorno heading east, leave it around Empoli, then follow the toll-free Firenze–Siena superstrada (RA3) south through the low Chianti hills past Poggibonsi and Monteriggioni. There are no mountain passes and few tight bends until the very end. Coming into Siena the road climbs and the approach narrows as you reach the city walls. Most of the historic centre is a ZTL (limited-traffic zone) with camera enforcement, so the last stretch is on foot from a drop-off point outside the gates such as near Porta Camollia or the Fortezza Medicea car parks.
Practical tips for this transfer
Give your driver the exact address and the name of your hotel's nearest gate, because vehicles cannot cross the ZTL and the closest legal drop-off may be several minutes' walk uphill on cobbles. Pack light or use a small bag for the walk in; the streets around the Campo are steep and stepped. If you arrive on a Palio day (2 July or 16 August) or the days around it, road closures shift the drop-off further out, so allow extra time. For onward trips into the Chianti or Val d'Orcia, a transfer that continues from Siena is more practical than the sparse rural buses. Many hotels can arrange a permit for a single ZTL entry to unload luggage — ask before arrival so the driver can confirm the plate.
