What Polis and Latchi are known for
Polis Chrysochous sits on the north-west coast facing Chrysochou Bay, far quieter than Paphos or the Coral Bay strip. The small square in the centre has tavernas and the shaded pedestrian streets around the church of Agios Andronikos. Most visitors head 3 km down to Latchi harbour for fish tavernas and boat trips to the Blue Lagoon, and on to the Baths of Aphrodite where the Akamas peninsula trails begin. Neo Chorio village sits on the hillside above. The area draws walkers, families using the Polis municipal campsite and beach, and people wanting the Akamas without the resort crowds. Spring and autumn suit the coastal hiking; July and August fill the Latchi waterfront and the boat-hire jetties.
The drive through the wine villages
From Paphos International Airport the route runs west past the town, then turns inland and climbs on the B7 through the Laona wine-country villages — Tsada, Stroumbi, Polemi and Kannaviou country. This is not motorway: it is a two-lane road that gains height with steady bends and views over vineyards and the Ezousa valley before descending toward the coast at Polis. The final approach drops through open farmland into Chrysochou Bay. Expect roughly 55–60 km and about 55 minutes, longer behind farm traffic or in summer holiday flow. The middle mountain stretch is the winding part; passengers prone to motion sickness should sit forward and keep water handy. The scenery shifts from coastal to hill terraces and back to coast.
Practical tips for this route
Polis and Latchi have few large hotels; many travellers stay in villas or apartments up on the Neo Chorio and Prodromi hillsides, where lanes are narrow and unnamed — bring the exact pin location and the owner's phone number, as satnav often stops at the village edge. There is no petrol station between Stroumbi and Polis, so drivers usually fill up beforehand. If you plan a Blue Lagoon boat trip, book the Latchi departure for the day after arrival rather than the same afternoon. Stock up at the supermarkets in Polis town before heading to the Akamas side, where shops thin out past the Baths of Aphrodite. For late flights, confirm pickup timing — the mountain section is dark and slower at night with limited lighting.
