What Peyia and Coral Bay are known for
Peyia is a hillside village on the west coast, spread above the sandy stretch of Coral Bay, which is the area's main family beach with shallow water and beach bars. Below the village the coast runs to the Sea Caves and the rusting Edro III shipwreck, both easy photo stops, and on to Agios Georgios and Cape Drepanum at the edge of the Akamas peninsula. Many long-stay British and Northern European residents live around Peyia and Kissonerga, so it is busier with self-catering visitors than package tourists. Summer brings families and swimmers; spring and autumn suit walkers heading into Akamas and the Avakas Gorge. The old village square, with its tavernas and small church, sits well uphill from the coast.
The drive up the coast from the airport
The route leaves Paphos International Airport on the A6 and skirts the southern and western edges of Paphos, passing above the tourist harbour area before joining the coastal road north through Kissonerga. This part is straightforward dual and single carriageway with sea views to the left. The final approach depends on your exact address: Coral Bay sits on the coast road, while Peyia village proper means turning inland and climbing a series of steep, winding streets to the higher neighbourhoods. Drivers used to the area know that Peyia's residential lanes are narrow and sharply graded, so the last few minutes are slower than the open coastal section. The whole trip normally takes around 35 minutes with light traffic.
Practical tips for arriving in Peyia
Give the exact villa or complex name and a pin location when you book: Peyia's upper streets are steep, unsigned and easy to confuse, and many holiday homes sit in similarly named cul-de-sacs. If your accommodation is at the top of the village, mention it, as some very narrow lanes suit a smaller vehicle. Coral Bay and the coastal apartments are simpler to reach. There is no useful public transport late at night, so a booked transfer matters for evening arrivals. Bring supplies if you land late, as Peyia's smaller shops close earlier than Paphos supermarkets. For day trips into the Akamas peninsula and Avakas Gorge you will need a 4x4 or an organised tour rather than a standard car, so plan those separately from your airport transfer.
