Arriving in Pamplona and the Casco Viejo
Pamplona (Iruña) draws its biggest crowds in July for San Fermín, when the encierro runs down Calle Estafeta toward the bullring and hotels near Plaza del Castillo fill months ahead. Outside the festival it's a steady flow of Camino de Santiago pilgrims, University of Navarra students and visitors to the Catedral de Santa María la Real, the star-shaped Ciudadela and the walls of the Casco Viejo. The old town is compact and walkable, with pintxo bars around Calle San Nicolás and Plaza del Castillo's cafés. Many streets inside the walls are pedestrian or restricted, so most transfers set down at the nearest accessible point, such as Paseo de Sarasate or the Ciudadela car parks.
The drive from Noáin airport into the city
Pamplona Airport sits at Noáin, just south of the city, so this is one of the shortest transfers in the region — usually around ten to fifteen minutes. The route runs north on the A-15 or the local roads through Noáin and Cordovilla, joining the PA-30 ring road that skirts the city's southern edge before dropping into the centre. The terrain is flat farmland of the Cuenca de Pamplona basin, with the Pyrenean foothills visible to the north. It's dual carriageway almost the whole way, with no mountain sections, so the ride is smooth. The only slow point is the final approach into the old town, where narrow one-way streets and pedestrian zones mean the last few hundred metres can take longer than the motorway stretch.
Practical tips for this transfer
During San Fermín (6–14 July) large parts of the centre are closed to traffic and streets around the encierro route are barricaded from early morning; agree a drop-off point outside the ring, such as the Plaza de la Cruz area or a hotel on the Segundo Ensanche, and expect to walk the last stretch. Book well ahead for these dates, as demand spikes. If you're starting the Camino from Pamplona, ask to be dropped near the Puente de la Magdalena or the cathedral to pick up the waymarked route. For winter arrivals, note that the basin can get morning fog and occasional ice, though the short, flat route is rarely disrupted. Confirm your terminal pick-up point, as the airport is small and easy to navigate.
