What Porto Rotondo is and who goes there
Porto Rotondo is a planned resort village built from the 1960s by the Venetian brothers Donà dalle Rose, sitting on a peninsula between the Gulf of Cugnana and Golfo Aranci. Life centres on the Marina di Porto Rotondo, lined with yachts, and the Piazzetta San Marco, ringed by boutiques and cafés. The Church of San Lorenzo holds carved wooden work by Mario Ceroli, who also created the open-air amphitheatre on the hillside. Beaches include Ira, Marinella and the coves around Punta Volpe. It draws yacht owners, second-home residents and well-off families in July and August, when the piazza fills at night. Spring and September are quieter, with warm sea and open restaurants but far fewer crowds.
The drive from Olbia airport to Porto Rotondo
The route runs north from Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, skirting the city and following the SS125 and the SP73 towards the coast. It is a short trip, roughly 28 kilometres and around 30 to 35 minutes in normal traffic. Most of it crosses gentle inland terrain and low hills covered in Mediterranean scrub, with the sea appearing as you near Cugnana and the turn-off for the peninsula. The final approach into the village is a slower, winding coastal road with roundabouts and speed limits that tighten as you reach the residential zones. In July and August the same road can slow noticeably around midday and early evening, when day-trippers and yacht crews come and go.
Practical advice for this transfer
Give your driver the exact address or the name of your hotel or residence, because Porto Rotondo spreads across several hillside neighbourhoods with similar road names, and "the marina" is not enough. Many villas sit on private lanes with restricted access, so confirm the drop-off point in advance. Much of the village core around the Piazzetta is pedestrian, meaning the closest a car reaches may be a nearby car park or gate. If you are heading on to Porto Cervo, Cala di Volpe or the Pevero coast, these are a further short drive and easy to combine. For summer arrivals, allow extra time either side of the transfer, as parking near the marina is limited and traffic builds sharply during the peak weeks.
