What Orosei is known for
Orosei sits a couple of kilometres inland on the east coast, at the mouth of the Cedrino river, with its beaches spread along the northern edge of the Gulf of Orosei. The old town is compact and walkable, built around the San Giacomo Maggiore church and the small squares near Sant'Antonio Abate. Most visitors come for the coastline: Marina di Orosei and Su Barone close to town, plus Cala Liberotto, Cala Ginepro and the protected Bidderosa pinewood oasis a short drive north. Families and beach-focused travellers dominate July and August; hikers and those heading further south to Cala Gonone and the gulf's cliffs come in spring and autumn. It stays residential and quiet outside peak season, unlike the resort strips around Olbia.
The drive south from Olbia airport
From Olbia Costa Smeralda the route runs south, mostly on the SS131 dcn dual carriageway that links Olbia towards Nuoro, before branching east on the SS129 corridor down to the coast at Orosei. It's around 100 km and typically 75 to 90 minutes. The terrain is inland and rolling for most of the way — cork oak country and low hills rather than sea views — and the driving is straightforward on wide, well-surfaced road. The scenery only opens towards the coast near the end, as you approach the Cedrino valley. There's no winding mountain section on this approach, so it's an easy ride for anyone prone to car sickness, and the final stretch into Orosei's centre involves a few narrow streets typical of an old Sardinian town.
Planning your arrival and beach days
If you're staying at one of the beach residences around Cala Liberotto or Cala Ginepro rather than in Orosei town, give the exact complex name and entrance — these are spread out along the coast road north of the centre and share similar names, so a precise address avoids confusion. For Bidderosa, note that vehicle access is capped daily and often needs booking in the peak weeks, so many visitors are dropped near the entrance and continue on foot or by shuttle. Supermarkets and pharmacies are in Orosei town, not out at the beaches, so plan a stop if you're self-catering. Late-night flights are common at Olbia in summer; confirm your pickup time with the driver, as the SS131 dcn is quiet but unlit in stretches after dark.
