The route follows the SS125 Orientale Sarda for most of the way, threading past Dorgali and climbing over the Genna Silana pass through the mountains behind the Golfo di Orosei. This is a genuinely winding mountain corridor with long stretches of curves, gradients and limited overtaking, not a motorway run, and passengers prone to travel sickness should sit in front and travel on a light stomach. The scenery through the Supramonte is the payoff. Nearer Tortolì the road flattens onto the coastal plain before reaching Arbatax and its port. Progress is slower than the distance suggests, so allow generous time.

Because the drive crosses mountain roads rather than motorway, schedule any onward ferry from Arbatax port with a comfortable buffer; delays behind slow traffic on the SS125 are common in summer. If your accommodation is in a resort or agriturismo outside the built-up area, share the exact address and coordinates, as properties around Tortolì, San Salvatore and Porto Frailis are spread out and not all are easy to find. There are limited fuel and rest stops on the mountain section, so a break in Dorgali is worth planning if you're travelling with children. For an early flight home, factor the full journey time back to Olbia and set off well before dawn. Confirm whether you want the direct SS125 route or a longer inland alternative in poor weather.
