What Arbatax is known for on the Ogliastra coast
Arbatax is a seaside district of Tortolì, on Sardinia's central-east coast in the Ogliastra region. Its signature sight is the Rocce Rosse, the red porphyry rock formations rising beside the port, where ferries connect to Cagliari, Civitavecchia and Genoa. The nearby beaches of Orrì, Cea (with its own red stacks) and Porto Frailis draw families in July and August, while the port area serves as a base for boat trips north to the Golfo di Orosei and Cala Goloritzé. Arbatax is also the coastal terminus of the Trenino Verde tourist railway. Most visitors combine a beach stay with day trips inland toward the limestone plateaus around Baunei and Ulassai, so the town works as a practical hub rather than a single attraction.
The drive south from Olbia along the SS125
Arbatax sits roughly 180 km south of Olbia Costa Smeralda, and the road journey usually takes around two and three-quarter hours. The route follows the SS125 Orientale Sarda for most of the way, threading past Dorgali and climbing over the Genna Silana pass through the mountains behind the Golfo di Orosei. This is a genuinely winding mountain corridor with long stretches of curves, gradients and limited overtaking, not a motorway run, and passengers prone to travel sickness should sit in front and travel on a light stomach. The scenery through the Supramonte is the payoff. Nearer Tortolì the road flattens onto the coastal plain before reaching Arbatax and its port. Progress is slower than the distance suggests, so allow generous time.
Planning your transfer to Arbatax and Tortolì
Because the drive crosses mountain roads rather than motorway, schedule any onward ferry from Arbatax port with a comfortable buffer; delays behind slow traffic on the SS125 are common in summer. If your accommodation is in a resort or agriturismo outside the built-up area, share the exact address and coordinates, as properties around Tortolì, San Salvatore and Porto Frailis are spread out and not all are easy to find. There are limited fuel and rest stops on the mountain section, so a break in Dorgali is worth planning if you're travelling with children. For an early flight home, factor the full journey time back to Olbia and set off well before dawn. Confirm whether you want the direct SS125 route or a longer inland alternative in poor weather.
