What makes Alghero different on Sardinia's west coast
Alghero sits on the north-west coast and keeps a Catalan identity going back to the 14th century — you still see bilingual street signs and hear "l'Alguer" used locally. The walled old town runs along sea-facing bastions (the Bastioni Marco Polo are the classic evening walk), with narrow cobbled lanes leading to the cathedral and the Torre di San Giovanni. The marina and the Riviera del Corallo draw summer visitors, while beaches like Maria Pia, Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto fill with families in July and August. Capo Caccia and the Grotte di Nettuno, reached by the Escala del Cabirol steps or by boat, are the main day-trip. Spring and autumn suit walkers and those wanting the old town without crowds.
Crossing Sardinia from Olbia to Alghero
This is a full cross-island run: Olbia is on the north-east coast, Alghero on the north-west, so you travel inland rather than along the sea. The route follows the four-lane SS729 towards Sassari, then continues on the SS291 down to Alghero, covering roughly 135 kilometres in around one hour and three quarters. The terrain is mostly rolling inland countryside — cork oaks, vineyards and open farmland around Sassari — rather than dramatic coast, so don't expect sea views for most of the drive. The road is modern and steady, with the only slower stretch being the approach into Alghero itself and, if you continue, the tighter lanes near the old town where cars are restricted. It's a longer transfer than most Olbia routes, worth factoring into your arrival plans.
Practical tips for the Olbia–Alghero transfer
Alghero has its own airport (Fertilia, about 10 km from the centre), so if your booking is flexible it's worth checking whether flights into Alghero itself work better than the long transfer from Olbia. If you're already committed to Olbia, treat this as a near two-hour drive and time it before beaches or evening reservations. The old town is largely pedestrianised with a ZTL, so ask your driver for the closest drop-off point to your accommodation rather than expecting door delivery inside the walls — a small suitcase on cobbles is easier than negotiating parking. For Capo Caccia trips, note the Grotte di Nettuno close in rough sea. Book return transfers in advance in July and August, when local traffic and beach-goers slow the Sassari corridor.
