What Saint-Paul-de-Vence is known for
Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a walled medieval village on a ridge inland from the coast, reached on foot through the Porte de Vence. The main street, Rue Grande, is lined with galleries and studios, a legacy of the painters who lived here in the 20th century. Just outside the ramparts is the Fondation Maeght, a modern-art museum set among pines with works by Miró, Giacometti and Chagall, who is buried in the village cemetery. La Colombe d'Or, the hotel-restaurant by the main square, holds its own collection of donated modern art. Day-trippers come year-round, with the heaviest crowds on summer mornings; art lovers, couples and food-focused travellers make up much of the visitor base rather than beachgoers.
The drive up from the airport
The route leaves the airport on the A8 motorway heading west, then exits near Cagnes-sur-Mer to climb inland. From there the road follows the D6007 and D2 corridor up through Cagnes and La Colle-sur-Loup, gaining height with each kilometre as the coastline drops behind you. The last stretch is a series of tight bends on a two-lane road that narrows as you near the village. Total driving time is usually around 30 minutes outside peak periods. The final approach is clearly rural and hilly rather than coastal, so expect olive terraces and stone walls rather than sea views. Traffic slows noticeably in summer around Cagnes and on the approach roads on weekend afternoons.
Practical tips for arriving at the village
Vehicles cannot enter the walled village; the streets are pedestrian and stepped. Drivers drop off at the car parks and turning area just below the Porte de Vence, from where it is a short uphill walk to the gate. Wear flat, grippy shoes, as the lanes inside are cobbled and steep in places. If you are staying at a hotel inside the ramparts, ask in advance about a luggage cart or porter, since bags must be carried on foot. Many galleries and the Fondation Maeght keep reduced hours or close for lunch, so an afternoon arrival works well. For an onward trip, Vence, Tourrettes-sur-Loup and the coast at Cagnes are all a short drive away and easy to combine.
