The course on Mont Agel above La Turbie
Despite the name, Monte Carlo Golf Club sits on French soil, on the plateau of Mont Agel at roughly 800 metres, above the village of La Turbie and its Roman Trophée des Alpes. It is not in Monaco itself but a 15–20 minute climb up from the coast. The 18-hole course opened in the early 20th century and has long been linked to the Principality, hosting the Trophée du Prince de Monaco. Players come for the altitude, cool air in summer, and views down over Cap-Martin, Roquebrune and the Italian border. The season runs roughly March to November; winter mornings can be cold and misty up here. Members, visiting golfers and Monaco residents make up most traffic, plus occasional walkers using the ridge paths.
Driving up from the airport via the A8 and La Turbie
The route leaves the airport on the A8 motorway eastbound, running past Nice, above the port and through tunnels toward the Roquebrune-Cap-Martin exit. That fast section is straightforward and covers most of the distance. The character changes at the exit: you climb toward La Turbie on the D2564 corridor along the Grande Corniche, then take the narrow mountain road onto the Mont Agel plateau. The final ten to fifteen minutes are tight, twisting and steadily rising, with hairpins and drop-away views over Monaco far below. Total driving is around 33 kilometres and typically 50–60 minutes depending on coastal traffic near Monaco. Passengers prone to motion sickness will feel the last climb; the motorway portion, by contrast, is smooth and quick.
Practical tips for golfers heading to Mont Agel
Book a vehicle with real boot space if you are carrying clubs and luggage, and mention bag count when reserving; the plateau road is not a place to be strapping a travel bag to the roof. Confirm your tee time against the drive: allow the full hour, plus buffer at peak season when the Corniche and Monaco approach clog. Bring a layer even in summer, as it is noticeably cooler and windier at 800 metres than on the seafront. Phone signal can drop on the climb, so save the club's address and any gate instructions offline. If you also plan to visit Monaco or La Turbie's old village and the Trophée, ask the driver to route via the Grande Corniche, which passes both on the way up.
