Bordighera on the Ligurian Riviera dei Fiori
Bordighera sits just inside Italy on the Riviera dei Fiori, a short drive east of the Ventimiglia border. It is known for its palm trees, which supply fronds to the Vatican, and for the long seafront Lungomare Argentina, one of the longest promenades in Liguria. The medieval Città Alta, entered through Porta Sottana, is a knot of narrow lanes above the marina, while Sant'Ampelio church marks the southernmost point. Monet painted here in 1884, and the exotic Giardino Botanico Winter reflects the town's British and villa-building past. Visitors are mostly older couples, families and off-season travellers looking for a quieter alternative to Sanremo, a few minutes further along the coast. Ventimiglia's Friday market and hilltop Dolceacqua are common day trips.
The drive east along the A8 and A10 motorways
From Nice Côte d'Azur the route runs east on the A8 (La Provençale), climbing away from the coast onto viaducts and through tunnels above Monaco and Menton. After the French–Italian border near Ventimiglia the road becomes the A10, the Autostrada dei Fiori, and you take the Bordighera exit. The whole journey is around 45 km and usually 50 to 60 minutes, almost all of it on motorway. Expect frequent tunnels and high viaducts rather than a seaside road — the coastline appears in glimpses between ridges. The final descent from the Bordighera toll gate into town is short. In peak summer and on weekends, traffic around Menton and the border can slow things noticeably.
Border, tolls and reaching your Bordighera address
Because this route crosses into Italy, carry your passport or ID card even though there are usually no fixed border checks. The A10 in Italy is a toll motorway, so a private transfer avoids any queue at unfamiliar toll booths. Give your driver the full street address: Bordighera splits between the seafront around Lungomare Argentina and the steep Città Alta, where cars cannot reach many doors — expect to be dropped at the nearest gate, such as Porta Sottana, and walk in with luggage. If you are staying near the Via Vittorio Emanuele shopping street, note it is partly limited-traffic. For onward trips to Sanremo, Dolceacqua or Ventimiglia's market, book the return in advance, as taxis are scarce in the old town.
