What Positano is like when you arrive
Positano stacks pastel houses down a steep hillside to the sea, with almost no flat ground. The main beach, Spiaggia Grande, sits below the church of Santa Maria Assunta with its majolica dome, while quieter Fornillo beach is a short walk west along the Via Positanos footpath. The town is largely pedestrian: Via dei Mulini and Viale Pasitea are lined with steps and small boutiques rather than roads. Summer brings couples, boat day-trippers and hikers using the Path of the Gods trail from nearby Nocelle and Montepertuso. Spring and September are calmer and better for walking. Ferries run from the marina to Amalfi, Capri and Sorrento, so many visitors use Positano as a base for the wider coast.
The drive over the Sorrento peninsula and along the coast
The route leaves the airport on the A3 motorway toward Castellammare di Stabia, then crosses the Sorrento peninsula on the SS145 before joining the SS163, the Amalfi Coast road. The first part is straightforward dual carriageway; the character changes once you reach the coast. The SS163 is a narrow, cliff-edge road with tight bends, blind corners and buses that often reverse to pass each other. From Meta to Positano expect a slow, winding stretch even without traffic. The total is roughly 60 km but commonly takes around an hour and three quarters. On summer weekends and around midday it can be much longer. The final descent into Positano is on hairpin turns, and vehicles cannot reach most hotels directly.
Practical tips for the final stretch into Positano
Cars stop at one of two points on the SS163 above town: the Chiesa Nuova entrance at the top or the Sponda entrance lower down, near the one-way loop through the centre. From either, reaching your hotel almost always means steps, so pack light and ask in advance whether your hotel offers a porter service or a small electric cart. Confirm your exact hotel name and the nearest drop-off point when booking, since the driver cannot enter the pedestrian core. If you are prone to motion sickness, sit in front and take something before the coast road. For an early flight, allow generous time, as the single coastal road has no alternative if it is blocked.
