What people come to Paestum for
Paestum is built around one of the best-preserved sets of Greek temples anywhere: the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Neptune and the smaller Temple of Athena stand in a walkable archaeological park, alongside the National Archaeological Museum and its Tomb of the Diver frescoes. History-minded day-trippers and school groups fill the site in spring and autumn. In summer the long sandy beaches at Lido di Paestum and Torre di Paestum draw families staying at coastal resorts near Capaccio. The plain around town is buffalo-mozzarella country, and many farms (caseifici) sell fresh cheese and offer tastings. Agropoli and the Cilento National Park sit just to the south for hikers and slower stays.
The drive south via Salerno and Battipaglia
The route leaves Naples airport and joins the A3 motorway south, skirting the edge of the Vesuvius area and passing Salerno, where the road becomes the A2 Autostrada del Mediterraneo. You stay on the motorway most of the way, exiting around Battipaglia onto the SS18, which crosses the flat Sele plain toward Capaccio-Paestum. The terrain is mainly agricultural lowland rather than mountain or cliff road, so the drive is smooth and largely straight until the final stretch. Traffic through the Naples–Salerno corridor can build in the morning and on summer weekends. Expect roughly an hour and a half door to door, a little more if you're heading to a beach resort south of the temples rather than the archaeological site itself.

Booking tips for the Paestum route
Tell the driver whether you're going to the archaeological park, the town of Capaccio Scalo, or a beach resort at Lido di Paestum — they are several kilometres apart and share confusing similar names, so the exact hotel or agriturismo address matters. Many coastal resorts sit down long private lanes off the SS18, unmarked from the main road, so a pin location saves time. If you plan to visit temples on arrival, note the site has parking near the northern (Porta Aurea) entrance. Buffalo-mozzarella farms are easiest with a car since they're scattered across the plain. For a same-day return to Naples, factor in summer beach traffic on the SS18 and around Salerno, and give yourself a generous buffer before your flight.
