What Meta di Sorrento is known for
Meta di Sorrento sits at the northern end of the Sorrento Peninsula, just before Piano di Sorrento and Sant'Agnello. Its main draw is the beach at Marina di Alimuri, a sand-and-shingle cove tucked below the cliffs, along with the smaller Spiaggia di Meta beside it — both reached by steep lanes and steps down from the town above. The Basilica di Santa Maria del Lauro anchors the old centre, with its dome and tiled interior. Families and couples use Meta as a quieter, cheaper base than Sorrento itself, walking or catching the Circumvesuviana train into town. Summer is busiest, when the beaches and lidos fill; spring and autumn suit walkers exploring the peninsula's paths toward Punta del Capo and the hills.
The drive along the A3 and SS145
The route leaves Naples airport and joins the ring road down to the A3 motorway toward Salerno, running past Vesuvius and Torre del Greco. You exit around Castellammare di Stabia, where the character changes: the road becomes the SS145 Sorrentina, a two-lane coastal road that climbs and twists along the peninsula's northern flank with sea views opening on the left. Traffic here is the main variable — the SS145 is notoriously slow in July and August and around weekends, and a journey that takes just over an hour off-season can stretch considerably in high summer. Meta is the first of the Sorrentine towns you reach, so the final winding stretch is shorter than for Sorrento or Positano further on.
Practical tips for arriving in Meta
Give your driver the exact street and, ideally, a photo of the entrance: many Meta hotels and B&Bs sit on the upper town above the beaches, and the lanes down to Alimuri are too narrow and steep for a large vehicle to reach the shore. Expect to be dropped at the nearest accessible point, sometimes with a short walk or steps to the water. If you have an early flight home, factor in the SS145 traffic and leave a generous margin in summer. The Circumvesuviana station in Meta connects you to Sorrento and Pompeii cheaply once you're settled. Confirm whether your accommodation has a loading bay or a nearby square, since stopping on the SS145 itself is difficult and often prohibited.
