Ischia is the largest of the islands in the Bay of Naples, and people come mainly for its thermal water and spa gardens rather than shopping or nightlife. Giardini Poseidon at Citara beach in Forio and Negombo at Lacco Ameno are the two big thermal parks, busiest from May to September. The Castello Aragonese, reached by a stone causeway from Ischia Ponte, is the landmark most visitors photograph. Forio, Casamicciola Terme and the small fishing village of Sant'Angelo draw families and older couples; hikers climb Monte Epomeo, the island's high point. Maronti is the longest beach, on the south coast near Barano. Ferries dock at Ischia Porto and Casamicciola, so decide your final village before booking a crossing.

You cannot drive to Ischia, so this transfer takes you from Naples International (Capodichino) to the ferry terminals on the Naples waterfront, a short run of roughly 7 to 9 km. The car leaves Capodichino, joins the tangenziale or the surface roads through the city, and heads down toward the port area around Piazza Municipio. Traffic near the centre and the port is the variable: 15 minutes off-peak can become 40 in rush hour or during a cruise-ship day. Hydrofoils (aliscafi) leave from Molo Beverello, right by Piazza Municipio; car ferries and slower boats use Calata Porta di Massa, a few hundred metres further along. The final approach is congested dockside road, not open motorway, so allow buffer time before your sailing.

Match your pickup to your boat, not the other way round. Hydrofoils from Molo Beverello reach Ischia Porto in about 50 minutes; car ferries from Calata Porta di Massa take around 90 minutes but run less often. Operators include Caremar, Alilauro, SNAV and Medmar; buy tickets in advance in July and August, when sailings sell out. Tell your driver the exact terminal, because the two ports are separate and luggage-heavy walking between them wastes time. If you land late evening, check the last departure carefully — crossings thin out after about 8pm. Keep some cash for the small port turnstiles and porters. Once on Ischia, buses and taxis serve the ring road, but the villages of Sant'Angelo and parts of Forio have restricted-traffic zones, so confirm how your hotel expects you to arrive.
