What Castellammare di Stabia is known for
Castellammare di Stabia sits at the southern curve of the Bay of Naples, where the coast meets Monte Faito. It's a working port town with the Fincantieri shipyard, ferry links to Capri and Sorrento, and the Marina di Stabia yacht harbour. The Roman villas of Stabiae — Villa Arianna and Villa San Marco — preserve wall frescoes on the hill above the modern town. The Faito cable car climbs from near the station to over 1,000 metres for walking trails and views over the gulf. Above the centre stands the Reggia di Quisisana, a former Bourbon summer palace. Visitors come for the Capri ferries, the mineral-water spa tradition, and as a quieter base for reaching Pompeii, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast without staying in a resort town.
The drive from the airport along the A3
The route leaves Naples International (Capodichino) on the city ring road and joins the A3 Napoli–Pompei–Salerno motorway heading south-east. It's motorway for most of the roughly 32 kilometres, passing the industrial edges of the bay and the Pompeii exits before reaching the Castellammare turn-offs. Traffic is the main variable: the A3 corridor is heavily used by commuters and holiday traffic, and the stretch around Torre Annunziata and Pompeii can slow to a crawl in summer and at rush hour. Allow around 45 minutes in normal conditions, longer on July and August weekends. The final approach drops down toward the seafront and port; if your accommodation is up toward Quisisana or the Faito road, expect steeper, narrower streets in the last few minutes rather than open highway.
Practical tips for this transfer
If you're heading straight to Capri or Sorrento by sea, tell the driver you need the Molo/port area rather than the town centre, as ferry and hydrofoil departures are seasonal and cluster in the morning — build in buffer time against A3 traffic. For the Faito cable car, note it runs spring to autumn and closes in winter and bad weather, so confirm before planning a mountain day. Many seafront and Quisisana-area lodgings are on limited-traffic or one-way streets; sharing an exact pin rather than just a street name helps the driver reach the door. Summer weekend afternoons on the A3 southbound are the worst window, so an earlier arrival slot is smoother. If you plan to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum en route, ask about it in advance rather than at pickup, as it changes the routing.
