What Bari offers when you arrive
Bari is Puglia's capital and its main Adriatic port, with ferries running to Greece, Albania and Croatia. The old town, Bari Vecchia, is a dense grid of alleys where women still make orecchiette pasta on tables by their doorways along Strada Arco Basso. Its landmarks are the Basilica di San Nicola, holding the saint's relics, and the Norman-Swabian Castello Svevo. Along the seafront, the Lungomare Nazario Sauro is one of Italy's longest promenades. The newer Murat district, laid out in a grid by Joseph Bonaparte's era, holds the shopping streets around Via Sparano. Travellers often use Bari as a base for Polignano a Mare, Alberobello's trulli and the Salento coast further south.
The drive across the Apennines to the Adriatic
This is a long cross-peninsula route, roughly 260 km and around three hours with clear traffic. From the airport you join the A16, the Napoli–Canosa motorway, which climbs inland through Avellino and the wooded Irpinia hills before crossing the mountainous spine of the country near the Puglia border. You'll notice the terrain shift from green Campanian slopes to the open, wind-farm-dotted plateaus of the Tavoliere. At Canosa the route feeds onto the A14 Adriatica heading south past Andria and Bitonto into Bari. Most of the journey is motorway, so the ride is steady; the mountain section can be gusty, and the final approach into central Bari means slower city streets near the port and Bari Vecchia, where large vehicles move carefully.
Planning your transfer to Bari
Because the drive is close to three hours, confirm whether your Bari destination is the port, the old town or a hotel in Murat, as each has different access. If you're catching a ferry to Greece or Albania, allow generous margin: check-in at the Terminal Traghetti closes well before departure and the port area gets congested. Bari Vecchia's alleys are largely pedestrian, so your driver will drop you at the nearest accessible point such as Piazza del Ferrarese rather than at the door. This is a good route for a mid-journey stop, as the A16 has service areas in Irpinia. If you plan day trips to Alberobello or Polignano, note these are separate onward drives south of Bari, not on this airport route.
