What Amalfi is and who comes here
Amalfi is the town that gave the coast its name, built into a ravine around Piazza del Duomo and the striped Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, reached by a long flight of steps. The main artery, Via Lorenzo d'Amalfi, threads inland past the Museo della Carta, where paper has been made for centuries, toward the Valle delle Ferriere trail. Marina Grande beach sits below the ferry dock. Visitors come from spring through October: day-trippers arriving by boat, couples, and hikers walking the paths to Atrani, the tiny village just around the headland, or up to Ravello. Summer is crowded and hot; April, May and September are more comfortable for walking the narrow lanes and lemon-terrace steps.
The drive along the A3 and SS163
From Naples airport the driver joins the A3 motorway toward Salerno, a fast run of about 45 minutes that skirts the base of Mount Vesuvius. The exit is at Vietri sul Mare, where the character of the trip changes completely: from there it is the SS163 Amalfitana, the cliff-hugging coast road, through Cetara and Maiori to Amalfi. This final stretch is roughly 20 kilometres of tight bends, blind corners and short tunnels, with the sea directly below and buses squeezing past in the opposite direction. Total time is usually around 90 minutes, but in July and August the coast road can crawl. Arriving from the Salerno side is generally less congested than approaching via Sorrento and Positano.

Practical advice for this route
Vehicles cannot reach most Amalfi accommodation directly: the town centre is pedestrian and traffic stops at the seafront near Piazza Flavio Gioia, by the bus terminus and ferry dock. Expect a short walk with luggage, often uphill or up steps, so pack accordingly and tell your host your arrival time. Give the driver a mobile number, as signal drops in the tunnels along the SS163. If you are prone to motion sickness, the coast road's constant bends are worst in the back seat; sit forward and keep water handy. During summer weekends, ask to be dropped early rather than circling for a stop. Consider timing arrival outside midday, when tour buses and day-trip crowds clog the single coastal lane through Amalfi.
