What Nîmes offers beyond the Roman arena
Nîmes keeps some of the best-preserved Roman monuments in France. The Arènes, a two-tier amphitheatre, still hosts concerts and férias; the Maison Carrée temple sits a few streets away, and the Jardins de la Fontaine climb toward the Tour Magne. The Écusson, the compact old town, is a maze of narrow lanes around Place aux Herbes and the cathedral. Visitors come for the Feria de Pentecôte in spring and the Feria des Vendanges in September, when bullrings and bodegas fill the centre. History travellers pair Nîmes with the nearby Pont du Gard aqueduct, about 25 km northeast. The Musée de la Romanité, facing the arena, gives context before you walk the streets.
The drive from Montpellier airport to Nîmes
The airport sits east of Montpellier near Mauguio, on the coastal plain. Drivers typically join the A9 motorway heading northeast, then branch onto the A54 toward Nîmes, exiting at Nîmes-Ouest or Nîmes-Centre. The route is flat and almost entirely motorway, crossing the Vaunage vineyards and scrubby garrigue rather than any coast or mountains, so it moves quickly outside rush hour. Expect roughly 55 km and about 45 minutes. The last stretch into the centre slows as you reach the boulevards ringing the Écusson; the streets around the arena are pedestrianised, so vehicles set down at the edge on Boulevard des Arènes or Boulevard Victor Hugo. Summer feria weekends add traffic and road closures near the bullring.
Practical tips for this transfer
If your hotel is inside the Écusson, tell the driver the nearest boulevard and gate rather than a street name, since much of the centre is closed to cars. For connections, Nîmes has two stations: Nîmes-Centre near the arena for regional and many TGV services, and Nîmes-Pont-du-Gard, a separate high-speed station about 15 km southwest at Manduel, so confirm which one your ticket uses before booking. During the Pentecost and Vendanges férias, ask to be dropped a few blocks out and walk in, as barriers appear around the arena. If you plan to continue to the Pont du Gard or Uzès, arranging it as part of the same transfer is simpler than finding transport from the old town.
