Arriving in central Marseille and the Vieux-Port
Most arrivals head for the Vieux-Port, the working harbour ringed by cafés where the morning fish market still runs on the Quai des Belges. From there it's a short climb to Notre-Dame de la Garde, the hilltop basilica visible from most of the city, and a walk into Le Panier, the oldest quarter with narrow stepped lanes and the Vieille Charité. The MuCEM and Fort Saint-Jean sit at the harbour mouth. Beach-goers continue south along the Corniche Kennedy to Plage des Catalans and the Prado beaches, while day-trippers use Marseille as the launch point for boats to the Calanques and the Château d'If. Cours Julien and La Plaine draw an evening crowd for bars and street art.
The A7 corridor from Marignane into the city
The airport sits at Marignane, on the edge of the Étang de Berre lagoon, roughly 27 km northwest of the centre. The usual route is the A7 autoroute southeast, skirting the industrial fringe before the road drops toward the coast. Traffic is smooth for most of the way, then slows on the approach as the motorway funnels into the city through the Prado-Carénage tunnel or the surface boulevards near Saint-Charles station. Expect about 30 to 40 minutes off-peak. The final stretch into the Vieux-Port and Le Panier involves tight one-way streets and pedestrian zones, so drivers often set down a short walk from the exact address. Morning and evening rush hours around Saint-Charles and the tunnels add noticeably to the time.
Practical tips for this airport-to-city run
If your accommodation is inside Le Panier or near the Vieux-Port, give the driver the nearest square or quay rather than the door — vehicles can't reach many addresses and you may finish on foot over cobbles. For the Prado beaches or Corniche, name the district (Roucas-Blanc, Endoume) so the driver takes the coastal exit instead of continuing to the centre. Cruise passengers should specify the Cap Janet or MPCT terminals at the Grand Port Maritime, which are north of the centre and quicker from the airport than the old harbour. Summer weekends and match days at the Stade Vélodrome cause congestion, so allow extra time for a flight out. The mistral wind can be strong on the exposed motorway sections but doesn't usually delay the drive.
