Avignon — private transfer from Marseille Provence Airport

What Avignon is known for

Avignon sits on the Rhône behind intact medieval ramparts, and the Palais des Papes dominates the old town as one of Europe's largest Gothic palaces. The famous Pont Saint-Bénézet, the half-bridge of the song, ends midstream in the river. Most visitors base themselves inside the walls, walking Place de l'Horloge, Rue des Teinturiers and up to the Rocher des Doms gardens for views over the river to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. July brings the Festival d'Avignon, when theatre fills courtyards across the city and hotels fill months ahead. The city also works as a base for the Rhône wine villages, Châteauneuf-du-Pape a short drive north, and the lavender routes toward the Luberon in summer. The train station connects onward to Arles, Nîmes and Aix.

The drive up the A7 to Avignon

The route is almost entirely motorway. From the airport at Marignane you join the A7 and head north up the Rhône valley, passing Salon-de-Provence and Orange country, with the Alpilles hills off to the west and mostly flat farmland and vineyards along the corridor. Expect around 70 minutes in normal traffic for roughly 80 km. The final stretch leaves the motorway and crosses toward the walled city; traffic slows near the ramparts, and cars cannot drive freely through the narrow pedestrianised old-town lanes. Summer weekends and festival dates in July add congestion around the city gates. The drive is easy and uneventful compared with the winding coastal roads east of Marseille, so it suits families and anyone with early flights who wants a predictable transfer.

Practical tips for arriving in Avignon

Ask your driver which gate to use: the old town has several openings in the ramparts, and if your hotel is inside the walls the driver may only be able to reach the nearest gate, leaving a short walk over uneven cobbles with luggage. Porte de la République, near the train station, is the main southern entrance. Many streets inside are pedestrianised or one-way, so confirm the exact drop-off address in advance. If you are heading not to Avignon itself but to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon or a Luberon village, say so when booking, as the route diverges before the city. During the July festival, allow extra time for road closures. There are two Avignon stations—central Avignon Centre and Avignon TGV to the south—so specify which if connecting onward by train.
