What people come to Aix-en-Provence for
Aix is a university town built around fountains and plane-tree avenues. Most visitors head straight for the Cours Mirabeau and the Rotonde fountain, then the pedestrian old town with its morning markets on Place Richelme and Place des Prêcheurs. Culture-minded travellers visit the Atelier Cézanne on the hill north of the centre, the Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur and the Musée Granet in the quiet Mazarin quarter. In July the Festival d'Aix fills the Théâtre de l'Archevêché and the Grand Théâtre de Provence with opera. Hikers use Aix as a base for the Montagne Sainte-Victoire east of town. It draws students year-round, festival crowds in summer, and day-trippers exploring Provence rather than the coast.
The drive north on the A51
The route runs inland, away from the coast, so there is no seaside scenery. From the airport at Marignane you join the A7 briefly, then the A51 motorway heading north through dry, rolling Provençal countryside with the odd view toward the hills. It is motorway almost the whole way and usually takes around half an hour outside peak times. The A51 leaves you at the ring road around Aix, and the last stretch into the centre is the slow part: the old town is largely pedestrian and one-way, so vehicles cannot reach many addresses directly. Traffic on the Aix bypass builds up during weekday rush hours and on summer festival evenings, which is the main thing that adds time.
Practical tips for arriving in Aix
Give your driver the nearest landmark rather than only a street name, since GPS often cannot follow you into the pedestrian core. La Rotonde and the top of Cours Mirabeau are the usual reliable drop-off points, and you may finish the last few minutes on foot with your luggage over cobbles. If you are staying in the Mazarin quarter, note its streets are narrow and one-way. During the July festival, hotels near the centre fill and evening traffic is heavy, so allow extra time for a return airport run. For the Montagne Sainte-Victoire or villages like Le Tholonet, arrange the transfer to continue past the centre rather than stopping in town, as onward taxis can be scarce.
