What Valletta City Centre holds
Valletta is Malta's walled capital, laid out on a grid over a peninsula between the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour. Most visitors head straight up Republic Street and Merchant Street, the two main pedestrian spines, for St John's Co-Cathedral with its Caravaggio canvases, the Grand Master's Palace and the Upper Barrakka Gardens overlooking the harbour and the noon Saluting Battery. Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum sit at the tip. Day-trippers arrive year-round; cruise passengers come up from the Valletta Waterfront at Pinto Wharf. The streets are steep, and side lanes drop away in long staircases. Nightlife concentrates around Strait Street. Summer is busy and hot; spring and autumn are the most comfortable for walking the town on foot.
The drive from the airport into the capital
The airport sits at Gudja/Luqa, only a short hop inland from Valletta. The route runs north through Marsa and along the harbour approaches, mostly on wide arterial roads rather than open motorway, so it is quick but often slowed by traffic near Marsa and Floriana at peak times. The drive normally takes around 20 minutes but can stretch longer during morning and evening rush. As you near the capital you pass through Floriana, with its bastions and the Phoenicia hotel, before reaching City Gate. The final approach is dominated by Renzo Piano's rebuilt City Gate, the Triton Fountain roundabout and the main bus terminus, which is usually crowded with buses and pedestrians.
Getting dropped off inside Valletta
Vehicles cannot drive freely into central Valletta: the town has a controlled vehicle access zone, and Republic Street and most of the grid are pedestrian-only. Drivers normally set you down just outside City Gate, at the Triton Fountain area, or at Castille Place near the Upper Barrakka lift. From there it is a walk into the centre. If your hotel is deep inside the town, expect to roll a suitcase over stone paving and some slopes, so pack accordingly. The Barrakka lift links the Upper Barrakka Gardens with the Waterfront if you are heading to a cruise ship. Tell your driver your exact hotel or street in advance, as the closest legal drop-off point varies and some lanes are stepped rather than driveable.
