What Qawra is known for
Qawra occupies the eastern arm of St Paul's Bay, running into neighbouring Buġibba and sharing the same long seafront promenade. It's a resort area built for holidaymakers: rows of mid-size hotels and apartments, the Malta National Aquarium out on Qawra Point, and a rocky coast with lidos rather than sandy beaches. Families and couples come mainly from May to October for the swimming, the promenade walk toward Buġibba's main square, and easy boat trips to Comino and the Blue Lagoon from Buġibba jetty. Nearby you'll find the Salina salt pans and Kennedy Grove just inland. It's a practical base for exploring the north, with plenty of restaurants, dive centres and evening bars concentrated around the square.
The drive from the airport to Qawra
The route runs from the airport at Luqa across to the north coast, around 22 km. Drivers typically head through the central corridor past Santa Venera and Msida, then out along the Coast Road (Triq il-Kosta) that hugs the shoreline from Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq up to St Paul's Bay. Most of the trip is on main roads and dual carriageway, with the final coastal stretch giving open sea views before the road bends into the resort. Expect roughly 35–45 minutes, though the Msida and St Julian's corridors can slow things down in weekday rush hours. The last part into Qawra involves tighter one-way streets around the hotels and promenade, so the final few minutes are slower than the open road suggests.
Practical tips for arriving in Qawra
Qawra, Buġibba and St Paul's Bay blend together with no clear boundary, so give your driver the exact hotel name and street rather than just "Qawra" — addresses around the promenade and Qawra Point can be hard to locate otherwise. Many hotels sit on pedestrianised or one-way stretches near the seafront, so drop-off may be a short walk from the door. If you're heading to Comino, note that boats leave from Buġibba jetty and Ċirkewwa, not Qawra itself. Bus route 12 links the area to Valletta and the airport, but with luggage a direct transfer is far simpler. For a late-night arrival, confirm your pickup point clearly, as the airport arrivals area is compact and taxi zones fill quickly in summer.
