From Malta International Airport at Luqa the route runs north, usually through the Marsa junction and onto the coast road that skirts St Julian's and St Paul's Bay, or via the inland arterial roads depending on traffic. Most of the journey is on Malta's better dual carriageways, so the middle stretch moves quickly. The character changes near St Paul's Bay: the road climbs the Xemxija hill in a series of bends before dropping toward Mellieha Bay. The final approach into the town is a steep, winding pull up to the ridge, and streets narrow considerably near the church. Expect roughly 40 minutes in normal conditions. Summer weekends and beach traffic toward Għadira can add time, as can ferry queues if you continue to Ċirkewwa.

Give your driver the specific area of Mellieha, not just the town name — the bay-level hotels along Għadira are a long descent from the ridge-top centre, and Popeye Village and Selmun are separate again. If your final destination is Gozo, confirm whether you want dropping at the Ċirkewwa ferry terminal, about ten minutes beyond Mellieha, rather than in the town. Many town-centre streets are narrow and one-way, so a large vehicle may set you down a short walk from the door. In summer, schedule airport pickups with buffer time for beach-bound congestion around the bay. If you're arriving late, note that public buses to Mellieha thin out at night, which makes a pre-booked transfer the more reliable option for the northern tip.
