Private transfer from Malta International Airport to Mdina
Door-to-door transfer from Malta International Airport to Mdina with professional driver, fixed price and flight monitoring included.
What you'll find in Mdina, the Silent City
Mdina is Malta's former capital, a fortified town on a hilltop with medieval and baroque streets enclosed by bastion walls. Only residents' cars are allowed inside the Main Gate, so it stays quiet — hence the nickname. Inside you'll find St Paul's Cathedral, Palazzo Falson, the Mdina Dungeons, and narrow limestone lanes used as filming locations for Game of Thrones. The Fontanella Tea Garden on the bastions gives long views over central Malta. Just outside the walls is Rabat, home to St Paul's Catacombs and the Domus Romana. Most visitors come as day-trippers, often combining Mdina with Rabat and Mosta. It's busiest in spring and autumn; summer middays are hot on the exposed walls, so early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable.
The drive from the airport to Mdina
Mdina sits inland, roughly 9 km northwest of Malta International Airport at Luqa, so the transfer is short — usually under 20 minutes outside peak hours. The route runs through central Malta rather than along the coast, passing through or near Qormi, Attard and Balzan, areas of dense housing and roundabouts rather than open countryside. As you approach, Mdina appears on its hill ahead, with the bastion walls visible before you reach it. Vehicles cannot enter the walled town, so drop-off is at the car park and taxi area near the Main Gate and Howard Gardens, on the Rabat side. Traffic around Attard and the Mater Dei hospital area can be slow at rush hour and school times, which adds a few minutes.
Practical tips for this transfer
Because no cars go through the Main Gate, agree with the driver on the exact drop-off point — the bus terminus and taxi bay outside the walls near Howard Gardens is the usual spot, a short walk from the gate. Wear flat shoes: the streets inside are cobbled and uneven. If you're staying at one of the small hotels inside the walls (such as those near the Cathedral), your luggage will need to be wheeled or carried in, as the lanes are narrow. Mdina pairs naturally with Rabat next door, so consider being dropped there too if you want the catacombs. For the return, arrange a pickup time in advance rather than expecting to hail a taxi at the gate, especially in the evening when the town empties out and few cabs wait.
