What Marsaskala is known for
Marsaskala (Wied il-Għajn) sits at the head of a long, narrow inlet on Malta's southeast coast. Its seafront promenade curves around the bay past fishing boats, small restaurants and cafés, and continues out to Zonqor Point, where locals swim off the flat rocks in summer. St Thomas Bay, just south, has a mix of sandy and rocky shore and a scatter of boathouses. The town is largely residential and popular with Maltese families and long-stay visitors rather than package tourists, so it stays quieter than St Julian's or Bugibba. Fort Saint Thomas and the old salt pans near the point are worth a short walk. Marsaxlokk, with its Sunday fish market, is a few minutes down the coast.
The drive from the airport to Marsaskala
The route is short and almost entirely across the southeast of the island, so there is no motorway stretch to speak of. From the airport at Luqa the driver heads through Gudja and towards Żejtun, following main roads inland before the land opens toward the coast at Marsaskala. The terrain is gently rolling and built-up rather than mountainous, passing between villages and fields. The final approach into town narrows as you reach the bay, where roads run close to the water and can be busy near the promenade in summer evenings. Expect roughly 20 to 25 minutes in normal traffic. It's one of the closest resort towns to the airport, so the transfer is quick compared with runs to the north of Malta.
Practical tips for this transfer
Give the driver a clear landmark rather than just "Marsaskala": the promenade, St Thomas Bay, or Zonqor Point, as the town spreads around the bay and up the hillsides. Many holiday apartments sit on steep side streets with limited turning space, so a specific street name and building number helps. In summer, the seafront road can be slow in the evenings when the restaurants fill; arriving off-peak is smoother. If you're heading to St Thomas Bay or the boathouses, note that some of those lanes are unpaved and hard to describe by name — a pinned location works best. Marsaxlokk's fish market is Sunday morning; if that's your plan, it's a short extra hop and easier arranged with your driver in advance than by local taxi on the day.
