What Zahara de los Atunes is known for
Zahara de los Atunes sits on the Atlantic coast of Cádiz province, part of the Barbate municipality. It's built around the ruins of the Castillo de las Almadrabas, the old tuna-fishing enclosure, and the town is still famous for almadraba bluefin tuna served in its restaurants each spring and early summer. The long, open beaches — Playa de Zahara and Playa del Carmen in front of the old town, plus Playa de los Alemanes down at the Atlanterra headland — draw mostly Spanish families and Sevillanos in July and August, when it fills completely. Expect strong Levante and Poniente winds, wide sand and few high-rises. Atlanterra, the strip of hotels and villas south of the centre, is quieter and residential.
The drive from Málaga along the coast to the Strait
The route runs west from the airport on the AP-7/A-7 corridor past Marbella, Estepona and Sotogrande, mostly fast dual carriageway with the toll motorway saving time in summer traffic. After Algeciras the road climbs and drops through the hills above the Strait of Gibraltar on the N-340 toward Tarifa, with open views across to Morocco on clear days. Past Tarifa you turn off onto the CA-2216 through farmland for the final approach into Zahara. Count on roughly two and three-quarter hours without stops. The last stretch is a single-lane country road, and the town's old core has narrow one-way streets, so drivers usually drop guests at the nearest accessible point rather than the doorstep in the centre.

Practical tips for arriving in Zahara
Confirm exactly where your accommodation is: the compact old town near Calle Real and the Atlanterra strip a few kilometres south are quite different for access, and giving the precise address avoids the driver hunting through one-way lanes. In peak August weekends the N-340 and the approach roads back up, so allow extra time for onward plans. There are no large supermarkets in the immediate centre, so if you're self-catering, a stop in Barbate or Vejer de la Frontera on the way in is worth arranging in advance. Bring layers even in summer — the Atlantic wind makes evenings cool. If you plan day trips to Bolonia's Roman ruins, Tarifa or Vejer, note these are separate short drives, not walkable from Zahara.
