Where Zagra sits in the Poniente Granadino
Zagra is a small hilltop village in the west of Granada province, part of the Poniente Granadino between Loja and Algarinejo. It sits above the Genil valley among endless olive groves, with the rocky Peña de Zagra rising behind the houses and the remains of a Nasrid-era castle overlooking the village. Most people who come here are visiting family, staying in rural houses, or exploring the quieter inland countryside rather than the coast. It is a working agricultural village, not a resort, so expect narrow streets, a modest centre and views over the surrounding sierras. Nearby Loja, with its river gorges and thermal springs, and Algarinejo make natural day trips from a base in Zagra.
The drive north from the coast to the Genil valley
The route leaves the airport and heads inland, joining the A-45 north towards Antequera before turning east onto the A-92 in the direction of Granada. It is dual carriageway for almost the entire way, so the bulk of the journey is fast and steady. As you climb away from the coast the scenery shifts from motorway sprawl to open farmland and rolling hills covered in olive trees. The final section leaves the A-92 near the Loja area and follows quieter local roads that wind uphill towards Zagra, where the last approach narrows as you reach the village. Allow around an hour and a half in normal traffic; the climb into the village is the only slow part.
Practical tips for arriving in Zagra
Zagra has very limited public transport, so a pre-booked door-to-door transfer is far more reliable than trying to connect through Loja by bus and taxi. Give your driver the exact address or the name of the rural house, as the village streets are steep and narrow and satellite navigation can be vague on the outskirts. If you are staying in an isolated cortijo among the olive groves, share a location pin in advance, since some access tracks are unpaved. There are few shops and no large supermarket in the village itself, so consider a stop in Loja for supplies on the way in. Evenings and winter mornings can be noticeably colder here than on the coast, so pack an extra layer.
