The journey leaves the airport on the A-7 coastal motorway heading east, past Rincón de la Victoria and Torre del Mar, then turns inland around Vélez-Málaga. From there the A-356 runs up towards the Viñuela reservoir before the A-402 begins the real climb. The final stretch to the Boquete de Zafarraya is a genuine mountain ascent: a series of bends carved into the rock face, with the pass opening suddenly onto the flat plain above. The contrast is sharp — coastal resorts and motorway for the first half, then a winding, slower final approach through the sierra. Expect around an hour and twenty minutes in normal conditions. The climb can feel exposed, so passengers prone to travel sickness may prefer to sit in the front.

Weather changes with altitude here. The coast can be warm while the plain around Zafarraya is windy and several degrees cooler, and in winter the pass occasionally sees fog, ice or even snow — pack a warmer layer even if you land in shorts. Services are limited once you leave Vélez-Málaga, so it is worth stopping for supplies, cash or fuel before the climb rather than expecting shops in the village late in the day. Have your exact address ready: Zafarraya, Ventas de Zafarraya and the scattered rural houses across the vega are easy to confuse, and satnavs sometimes route to the wrong one. If you are heading to a walking trailhead or the Vía Verde, give the driver the specific access point rather than just the town name.
