Yegen and the high Alpujarra
Yegen is a white village on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, in the Alpujarra of Granada province, sitting at roughly 1,000 metres. It is best known as the place where the writer Gerald Brenan lived in the 1920s and wrote about in "South from Granada"; his house still carries a plaque near the main square. Visitors come mainly for walking: the GR-7 long-distance path passes through, and trails link Yegen with neighbouring villages like Válor, Mecina Bombarón and Bérchules. The two fountains in the lower square and the flat-roofed Berber-style architecture are the things people photograph. Spring and autumn draw most hikers; summer is cooler here than on the coast, and winter can bring snow to the higher ground above the village.
The drive from Málaga up into the Alpujarra
The route runs east along the A-7 coastal motorway past Nerja and Almuñécar towards Motril, then turns inland. Most drivers head up the A-44 briefly before branching onto the A-348, the road that threads through the Alpujarra via Órgiva and Cádiar before reaching Yegen. The first two-thirds are fast dual carriageway with sea views; the last stretch is a different experience entirely — a climbing, tightly winding single road with switchbacks, blind bends and villages clinging to the hillside. Expect the final section to feel slow even though the distance is short. Total journey time is usually around two and three-quarter hours. Passengers prone to motion sickness will notice the curves once you leave the coast, so sitting in the front helps.
Planning your transfer to Yegen
Give the driver the name of your accommodation and, if you can, a nearby reference point — the lower square with the fountains, or the road into the village from Válor. Yegen's streets are narrow and steep, and vehicles often cannot reach a doorstep, so agree a drop-off point where you can meet and walk the last few metres with luggage. Mobile coverage in the deep Alpujarra can be patchy, so confirm arrival details before you leave the airport. There are few services once you turn off the coast, so buy anything you need in Motril or bring supplies. If you plan to hike, note that afternoon light fades fast behind the mountains; arriving before dusk makes finding your lodging far easier.
